Benzene Found in Mississippi Ground Water Pollution

Benzene Found in Mississippi Ground Water PollutionTesting is currently underway in Mississippi to determine the extent of groundwater pollution resulting from a former chemical and munitions manufacturing plant. Delaware Online reports that the plant was originally run by Hercules Inc., but was purchased by Ashland, Inc. in recent years and ultimately relocated. The company employs about 500 in Delaware.

In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency discovered traces of benzene and other dangerous chemicals in the groundwater and soil near the century-old plant, and these traces are believed to have been left behind by Hercules, as their manufacturing process relied heavily on benzene and benzene-containing chemicals. The EPA continues to investigate the matter, and local residents have filed lawsuits due to benzene exposure.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has also joined the effort, drilling test wells near the plant and examining samples accordingly. The Department has stated that the information gathered from these samples will be used for the comprehensive cleanup effort. As for Hercules, the company is no longer in business, but Ashland still bears much of the liability.

The issue is still ongoing, but benzene exposure is always a very serious matter. Benzene exposure has been linked to a wide variety of life-threatening diseases, including Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Myelodyspastic Syndrome (MDS), Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL), Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), Myelofibrosis and Myeloid Metaplasia, Aplastic Anemia. Manufacturing plant workers are often at risk due to the excessive presence of benzene-containing products, but as we see in cases like this, local citizens can also be impacted as well.

If you or someone you love has developed one of the aforementioned diseases after being exposed to benzene, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, medical costs and more. But these types of cases are extremely time sensitive, and you must act quickly. The benzene exposure attorneys at Nadrich & Cohen LLP have been fighting on behalf of personal injury clients for more than 25 years, and we have recovered more than $1 billion for our clients. We are skilled, experienced and aggressive, and we don’t charge you a dime if we don’t win your case.
